Introduction to the 'new' SEED.
'You know the origins of SEED magazine come from the marijuana initiative right?'
That's not why we were considering changing the name, but when we discovered that little bit of history, we felt the impetus to change the name grow. This may be a student magazine, but we weren't keen on implied connections to drugs.
The story of the origin of the title 'SEED' comes from the testimonies of the original editor Paul Adams who claims the first student union members ran a marijuana collective at the time SEED was founded in 1976.
After much deliberation we decided that the word 'seed' means more than the original editors intended. An actual seed represents growth and development, so as a university full of budding minds added to the fact that SEED as a publication has a new team, new direction, new look and a stronger commitment to the environmental considerations (see page 42) of running a magazine, the name remained relevant and appropriate.
We are here to represent all students at Victoria University, hence the motto 'by students for students'.
Taking into consideration the new direction of the magazine, we now hope to focus more on student events, bringing the latest news on what has happened, happening and will happen around VU. We also hope to bring forward major student issues, hot new events and provide a platform for student showcases.
We welcome anyone with ideas that fit this plan to submit to us, or even just volunteer as a reporter and we will give you an assignment to fulfil. We want this magazine to be as user friendly to Victoria University students as we can manage. Let us know what you think of this first Isuue.
